Carbon moves through systems. It does not disappear.
Carbon and energy recovery are frequently discussed through the language of circularity and avoidance. GCCEI separates the physical act of recovery from the comparative claim of environmental benefit.
Circular carbon
The governing chain is Material → Recovery → Product Quality → Actual Use → Displacement → Final Fate. Stopping at recovery produces an incomplete circularity claim.
Recovery versus avoidance
Recovered carbon is not automatically avoided carbon. Recovered energy is not automatically avoided energy. Avoidance requires a credible counterfactual showing what virgin material, fossil energy or other burden is genuinely displaced.
Energy balance
GCCEI distinguishes gross energy produced, internal energy consumed, net energy exported and energy actually displaced. A thermally self-supporting process is not automatically environmentally superior.
Fossil and biogenic carbon
Carbon origin matters, but neither category should be assigned automatic climate neutrality. Timing, land use, regrowth, system boundaries and final fate remain relevant.
Lifecycle boundaries
Climate conclusions can change when transport, preprocessing, alternative treatment, product substitution, methane, grid emissions or product lifetime are added to the boundary. Assumptions must therefore remain visible.
