Global challenges. Local consequences.

Environmental challenges can cross borders without producing identical consequences everywhere.

GCCEI uses a common analytical sequence:

Global Challenge → Local Mechanism → Local Exposure or System Condition → Local Consequence → Evidence → Appropriate Response

Current evidence-led cases examine the Tibetan Plateau and wider Himalayan cryosphere; Africa; India and South Asia; the Middle East and North Africa; Europe; and North America.

These cases do not treat regions as homogeneous. Their purpose is to show which mechanisms are transferable, which local conditions change the outcome, and what evidence is needed before one jurisdiction's conclusion is carried into another.

For the wider picture, see The Current State of Affairs: what is happening, who is affected and what we actually know.

Africa — Waste Systems, Open Disposal, Public Health and Environmental Opportunity

Africa cannot be described through one waste system. Across the continent, rapidly growing cities coexist with very different levels of collection, segregation, recycling, controlled disposal and institutional capacity. Where waste remains uncollected or openly dumped and burned, a material-management problem can become an air, water, soil and public-health problem.

Tibetan Plateau and the Wider Himalayan Cryosphere — Global Warming, Black Carbon, Water and Human Security

The Tibetan Plateau and wider Hindu Kush Himalayan cryosphere demonstrate how global atmospheric change becomes a regional system of changing glaciers, snow, water, hazards, ecosystems and human security. Black carbon adds an important regional forcing mechanism, but it does not replace greenhouse-gas-driven warming as the principal cause of long-term cryosphere loss.
